Blaugust 2026 #5: Creative Endeavors
Catching up on the themes from Krikket's Blaugust post here...the question of the day is:
What creative endeavor have you always wanted to try and who is someone you admire in the field?
I've always wanted to try to get better at drawing! When I was younger, I took a few classes but was realllllllly bad at it and got discouraged enough for it to stick in my mind that I just wasn't good. But many years later, now I know that "being good" at something is from practice. It's the same as singing...I loved to sing but was always told by my mother that I sounded terrible which of course gave me incredible self esteem and motivation.

My mother was highly critical of everything so anything that I wasn't good at right away was shut down almost immediately. And it became a thing where I didn't want to try anything anymore because it would only get criticized without any positivity or encouragement. So, I became someone who created in secret, never sharing anything with anyone (I used to write poetry/fiction a lot).
I've had many friends who were great artists especially with pen, charcoal, pencil, etc. My cousin was one of the first people I admired for her drawing skills! Her birthday cards were always my favorite because she would decorate them herself with super cute figures and fonts. Growing up, schoolmates and friends were always doodling around in class and I've dated incredible artists as well.
Before I came to the realization that "talent" is kinda a myth and it's really all about interest, motivation, and practice to develop those SKILLS, I used to say "I can't draw" - which isn't true. I could...
